The core value proposition of predictive and generative AI is speed and increased accuracy of decision-making to drive a wide range of productivity improvements. This concept has universal appeal across all industry verticals, but realizing the benefits is led through innovative design-thinking approach to ensure users can harness and be delighted by the powers of AI.

As AI has disrupted the way we think about interacting with data and technology, SymphonyAI has brought the same pace of innovation to its user experience philosophy, allowing for highly usable innovative experiences. Through design-thinking methodology, initially established at Stanford’s d.school, a short walk from SymphonyAI’s headquarters in Palo Alto, the SymphonyAI design team looks to solve true industry problems using AI integrated into the UX/UI and workflow versus simply putting AI onto a product.

The backbone of SymphonyAI’s product design strategy is a well-established design system, providing all industry product teams a core set of components. These components also accelerate development time and consistency across product suites.

As generative AI gathered momentum throughout 2023, because SymphonyAI embraced a design system approach, it was able to launch highly usable and focused industry copilots at a rapid pace. The first SymphonyAI copilot, for financial crime investigators, was released in April 2023 and is a benchmark in the industry not only for being one of the first enterprise AI copilots available, but as a tool that seamlessly connects to investigator workflows, supporting their needs through AI.

We at SymphonyAI believe it shouldn’t take a data scientist with an advanced degree to realize the benefits of increasingly powerful predictive and generative AI solutions. The technology’s complexity should be upstream from users who can intuitively execute commands and achieve results regardless of their skill level. This view underscores the reality that the value creation potential of AI technology is proportional to its ease of use and accessibility to those of varying skill levels.

Mobile-first to Gen-AI-first

Once mobile devices went from a second screen to a primary way to interact with many applications, designers adopted a new philosophy of ‘mobile-first design’, with focus on the primary experience on mobile and secondary larger web experiences from that. This was a revolution in the design industry, allowing many innovative mobile experiences to take the forefront. Today, we are in the transition again, where generative AI can create new content and screens on the fly. This new way of working and thinking is quickly elevating to be a primary experience path. With that priority, SymphonyAI’s UX team is bringing a new generative AI-first approach to design. Primary workflows assume and use an AI approach, allowing us to compose functions and screens and transform the way we think about creating dashboards and workflow tools.

Accelerating the adoption of AI automation

SymphonyAI’s creation of a design system and the application of design thinking to product development elevates our industry leading capabilities, to simplify how workers interact with predictive and generative AI. Through a set of frameworks that have been validated through end-user testing, the goal is to have AI infused across out entire product portfolio with flexible and intuitive interfaces, helping users to quickly understand complicated data and drill into it for insights and recommendations.

As mentioned previously, one example of this generative AI-first approach is the Sensa Copilot for financial crime investigators. The interface uses the natural language capabilities of generative AI to capture investigator queries. AI results are brought right into the user flow to serve up the highest relevant information to the user at the exact right time.

According to recent research, improving user experience facilitates adoption of predictive and generative AI tools among workers, some of whom may be skeptical of promised benefits. For example, Accenture noted in a fourth quarter survey of 2,425 C-suite executives from 13 countries across 18 verticals that, “C-suite executives believe in the power of generative AI. Nearly all expect generative AI to be transformative for their company and their industry and the vast majority believe that integration of generative AI will allow them to increase their market share.”

Generative AI also topped the list of areas where respondents said they plan to increase spending in 2024, but when asked about adoption of new tools, 44% cited the time required to learn new tools as the top reason for AI reluctance among workers.

This concern is reduced significantly by using user-centered design principles, putting the user first, utilizing known UI paradigms and running significant usability testing. The benefit of intuitive UI is reduced training for new users and quicker proficiency for existing users. Ultimately, the benefits of predictive and generative AI are more broadly disseminated throughout the organization to fulfill the promise of value creation.
